Ozempic is a medication for Type 2 diabetics that, in conjunction with diet and exercise, may lower blood sugar levels. Ozempic belongs to a group of drugs known as glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) agonists (also known as incretin mimics).

When you need insulin, Ozempic promotes the release of insulin from the pancreas by binding to GLP-1 receptors. It also helps to limit the quantity of sugar generated by the liver and slows down the exit of food from the stomach. Your A1C and blood sugar levels are both lowered as a result of these combined actions, which may also help you feel less hungry.

The most common side effects of an Ozempic dosage may include:

  • Nausea
  • Diarrhea
  • Stomach (abdominal) pain
  • Vomiting
  • Constipation

A prescription of an Ozempic injection (semaglutide) is used, together with diet and exercise, to lower blood sugar levels in persons with Type 2 diabetes. Ozempic dosage is usually available in doses of 0.5 mg, 1 mg, or 2 mg.

Ozempic dosage should be administered by a patient once weekly on the same day each week, at any time of the day, with or without meals. The day of weekly administration can be changed if necessary as long as the time between 2 doses is at least 2 days (>48 hours).

Ozempic cannot be purchased over-the-counter in Canada, therefore a prescription is required. If you want to know if Ozempic is the right medication for you, consult a Virtual Health Clinic healthcare provider to find out if this is the right treatment and solution for you.

Unfortunately, Ozempic is not covered under the ODB program or the Trillium Drug plan for weight management. Provincial guidelines do not currently recognize it as a weight loss or management treatment. People looking to use Ozempic for weight loss will have to pay out of pocket or through their private insurance without the help of ODB coverage.

Patients with private drug plans may be eligible for coverage of Ozempic, depending on the insurance provider and specific plan. Coverage options can vary, from partial prescription drug coverage to requiring additional out-of-pocket costs or having a maximum amount the company will cover. We would recommend that you check with your insurance provider for coverage eligiblity.

If your health insurance includes Ozempic coverage, then you may be able to get Ozempic for free or for a reduced price. To find out if your coverage includes Ozempic, check with your insurance provider.

Both nausea and dehydration may occur in people using Ozempic. They may also experience malaise and weariness. Their bowel habits could alter, with some individuals developing severe constipation while others experience diarrhea. Pancreatitis, a painful disorder that inflames the pancreas, may occasionally be made more likely by Ozempic dosage.
